Accreditation Actions

December 2013 Accreditation Action: Accept the Progress Report.
Rationale: The program is compliant with all Standards.

Accreditation Award: Continuing Accreditation

May 2013 Accreditation Action: Grant 10 years of Initial Accreditation with a Progress Report. The program remains non-compliant with the following Standards:
The following Standards are Partially Met:
Standard 4. Program goals. There seems to be confusion about what constitutes educational outcomes. The final outcomes seem to be geared towards providing program credibility in health informatics. There is nothing clearly demonstrating that a measurable continuous quality improvement process is in place for student learning outcomes.
Standard 9. Program Specific Curriculum. It is recognized that this is a relatively new program and that some of the curriculum is emerging. As such, some of the CAHIIM curricular components are not yet being taught. However for some curricular components that are being taught, neither the site visit nor a detailed review of the syllabi could confirm the degree to which there is adequate coverage in terms of breadth, depth, and scope. This was complicated by the fact that Marshall University does not require a baseline standardization (although this appears to be changing) across syllabi content for the same sections. For example, a course taught by two different professors could contain variable syllabi and as a result variable course content. It is possible that more developed and detailed syllabi would provide evidence of adequate coverage of these components. The Curriculum Requirements and Findings Report gives a more detailed discussion of the curriculum components for the program that need to be addressed.
Standard 10. Staying Current. Where literature was listed in the syllabi, much of it (sans seminal pieces) appeared to be outdated or did not consider a health informatics perspective. Faculty are not engaged with submitting to or attending national conferences. While plans are in discussion this has not been implemented.
Standard 12. Professional Development. The school does not provide sufficient opportunities for faculty who are teaching in this program to stay current with evolving and emerging issues and practices in health informatics.
Standard 13. Program Director. The lack of operational support for the director does not give him the necessary time to stay current on emerging and evolving trends within health informatics policy and practice in addition to his program administrative responsibilities. This situation could limit program currency, growth, and sustainability. Additionally, it could lead to “burn out” if this program is not supported (human or fiscally) equally to other University programs.
Standard 14. Qualifications. All CVs were reviewed on site. Several were lacking recent publications as demonstration of scholarly work and many did not contain publications with an informatics (health or otherwise) target or focus.
