CAHIIM has a number of opportunities to get involved. Professionals and educators may wish to serve on the Board of Directors, one of the Accreditation Councils, or as a peer reviewer. We also welcome the public to serve on our Board of Directors.

Peer Reviewers

Peer Reviewers

Accreditation Peer Reviewers are the essential basis of the CAHIIM program accreditation assessment process. Peer reviewers are academic professionals that are associated with CAHIIM Accredited programs. Peer Reviewers are designated as representative of either the Health Informatics or the Health Information Management professions. They are trained by or obtaining sufficient information to understand the total educational program and to ensure the quality of the program’s stated philosophy, goals, objectives and curriculum with the established Accreditation Standards. Trained Reviewers are dedicated volunteers and through their role provide a service in verifying program information on the operations and performance of all Accreditation Standards. The peer review team will report all findings during the site visit to either the Health Information Management Accreditation Council (HIMAC) or the Health Informatics Accreditation Council (HIAC), based on the program and program level they are reviewing.

Requirements for Peer Reviewers

Peer Reviewers must be able to travel across the country, have excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, good time management skills, flexibility, demonstrate good team leadership, and have access to a laptop or tablet computer. A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Reviewers are required to conduct two site visit reviews per calendar year if sites are available.

HIM Peer Reviewer Qualifications

  • The professional credential of RHIT or RHIA – Master’s degree is preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching and/or program director experience in a CAHIIM Accredited program.

HI Peer Reviewer Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in any field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years teaching and/or program leadership experience in a Health Informatics program.
CAHIIM Board of Directors

CAHIIM Board of Directors

Nominations are currently closed for the CAHIIM Board of Directors.

The current term of volunteer service is for three years: January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027.

CAHIIM Board of Directors exercise all corporate powers and manage the business affairs of CAHIIM. The Board has the fiduciary responsibility and sets the strategic direction of the corporation. The contributions of our Board are vital to CAHIIM achieving its mission and its newly articulated strategic direction that of independence, growth, continued relevance and sustainability.

CAHIIM is currently organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. CAHIIM serves the public by establishing standards, as well as enforcing these standards for the educational preparation of Health Informatics (HI), Health Information Management (HIM) and other health professionals ensuring a workforce that can provide the highest achievable quality of Healthcare.

Health Informatics Accreditation Council (HIAC)

Health Informatics Accreditation Council

The HI Accreditation Council (HIAC) makes recommendations on program reviews through established processes. They review and revise the HI Accreditation Standards (at least every five years) in conjunction with the Board. They abide by the core values and code of conduct for CAHIIM decision-makers and contribute to the CAHIIM year-end summary. The HIAC oversees the Peer Reviewers who serve the Council by establishing and maintaining a set of qualifications for Peer Reviewers, approving appointment of new Peer Reviewers, and reviewing site visitors and program evaluations.

The Council holds at least one face-to-face meetings annually and monthly conference calls to handle the caseload of reviews.

Qualifications of Council Members

Required

  • Demonstrated experience as an educator with proven educational leadership.
  • For a practitioner, has served as adjunct faculty or educational program advisory board member in the discipline represented by the Accreditation Council.
  • Hold a terminal degree in the field related to the Council’s scope of accreditation.
  • Exhibit exemplary ethical and legal behavior.
  • Employment severance with the Member organization
  • Past service as a director of any Member Organization’s Board of Directors or similar body.
  • Agreement to abide by CAHIIM’s requirements concerning confidentiality, conflicts, dualities, and fiduciary responsibility.
  • Agreement to abide by the core values and code of conduct for CAHIIM decision-makers.
  • No concurrent service that would represent a conflict of interest to CAHIIM.

Desirable

  • Innovative.
  • Collaborative.
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge base in the discipline.
  • Possessing excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Graduate or terminal degree, doctoral degree preferred.
  • Past experience with other groups that complement CAHIIM’s activities, such as a certification board for the discipline represented.
Health Information Management Accreditation Council (HIMAC)

Health Information Management Accreditation Council

Members of the Health Information Management Accreditation Council (HIMAC) evaluate HIM programs at the associate, baccalaureate, and master degree levels and offer recommendations on accreditation to the CAHIIM Board of Directors. The Council reviews and revises the HIM standards for accreditation every five years. HIMAC members work on various projects, collect data related to the growth and future of HIM education and educators, offer a presence at various professional meetings, and are dedicated to maintaining the quality of all HIM programs. The Council holds at least one face-to-face meeting each year, and participate in monthly virtual conference calls.
